Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get your products?
Please visit our Ethical Sourcing page.

How do I place an order?
The easiest way to order is using our Shopping Cart. When you click on a specific lot number (like 1999-1999) the page for that item will have a blue "Add to Cart" button. It will ask you to Login or Register. You can add multiple items to your cart and then use our Secure Checkout to provide your payment information (Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover).

We are also happy to take your order by phone during our regular hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, Pacific Time). Our number is 208-882-0601.

See our Ordering Page for our full terms and details about placing orders.

What does "???" mean?
Our web site uses a lot of terminology that may be unfamiliar. We have a Glossary.

Do I have to buy all the items in the lot?
No. When we have several items available in a lot (under Qty Avail), you can buy one, all, or any number you want of that item. Some smaller items are packed and priced in packages of two or more items, and you have to purchase mutliples of these packages.

What does "very slightly damaged" mean?
Because our products come from nature, each one is different, and some have small defects. Items are graded on a purely subjective scale like this example for furs and skulls:
  • #1 quality items have no defects
  • very slightly damaged items have very small defects, such as very small holes in leather, or very small chips off a point or tooth, etc. that are generally not noticeable with a casual glance.
  • slightly damaged items will have more or slightly larger defects.
  • damaged items will have large, obvious defects.
  • How do you measure furs?
Hides come from real animals that were alive in nature. They are not made from flat fabric, but have the natural shape of the animal with curves and rolls around the neck, shoulders, hips, etc. Measuring the hide loosely or laying it flat on a table will not get the full length of the hide or give the same measurement every time, as shown in the first two pictures below.

We measure hides by pulling them tight by hand and measuring the length in a straight line, as in the third picture below. Line drawing to illustrate hide measurement

Some hides are measured as "total length" (from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail) and some are measured NTB (from the Nose To Base of the Tail, the length without the tail included). Beaver rounds are measured the traditional way, as length + width, pulled tight front to back and measured, then pulled tight left to right and measured and the two numbers added. The specific measurement is indicated with each item.

What does 34 sq ft / 3 pieces mean?
This means that we have a total of three pieces available, and their combined size is 34 sq ft. This is how we describe the quantity available of merchandise that is priced per square foot, but comes in discrete quantities - one hide, one piece, etc. You can see a list of the individual pieces available if you click on the lot number in the left hand column.

Do you custom cut your leather?
No. We don't custom cut pieces out of our leather. If you don't need a whole hide for your project, we do have smaller pieces available in most categories.

What is the difference between buckskin and leather?
Although sometimes "buckskin" is used to refer specifically to deer leather, we use the terms interchangeably.

When will you get more of X? Do you ever get Y?
Because most of our products come from nature, we can't just order more from a factory. It's impossible for us to know when we may have any specific item.

What is the difference between raw furs and tanned furs?
Raw furs have not been tanned. Tanning a fur preserves it for the long term, turning the skin into leather. A raw fur may be salted and/or dried, but may be slightly greasy and generally needs to be further preserved (tanned) to be used in most craft projects.

    When will my order ship?
Most orders ship the same day they are placed, if you order later in the day it may ship the next business day. If your order is a rush, tell us and we can try to make sure it goes out the same day.

How long will it take to get my order?
Most orders ship by Post Office Priority Mail which takes 2-3 days. Orders for large, bulky, heavy or expensive items may ship by UPS Ground, which can take 1-8 business days. We can also ship by Post Office Express Mail (1-2 days) or UPS 3rd Day Select, 2nd Day Air or Next Day Air on request. You can check our UPS Service map or the UPS Web Site for more information.

How do I know if an item is in stock?
This web site is linked directly to our inventory database so it is always up-to-date (actually there's about a one minute delay). Everything you see here is in stock as of this moment, and you can call and order it. If you check back after you place your order, the item you just ordered will be gone (you may have to press "Reload" in your browser to see the latest information).

Can you send me a printed catalog?
We no longer print paper catalogs, but if you have Internet access, you wouldn't want one - it wouldn't have pictures, and it would always beout of date. But our web site, which you are reading now, has pictures and is always up-to-date.

Can you e-mail me pictures of certain items?
We have pictures posted of many items. For example Tanned Coyote Hides and White Tail Deer Taxidermy Sets. If a lot has pictures there is one picture listed on the category page, and if you click on the picture or the lot number, you will go to a page with more details, ordering information, and links to any additional pictures. Unfortunately it's not practical for us to photograph every item in our inventory. We provide detailed descriptions of these items.

Will you ship some item to my country / internationally?
No. Please see International Orders on our Ordering page for more information.
